Qiqqa Entrepreneur Wins 5k

James Jardine from the University of Cambridge in the UK won third prize in the post-graduate category of the Santander University Entrepreneurship Awards.

He scooped 5,000 for his company Qiqqa.com a company that provides free software which helps students and researchers manage information.

The awards aim to support and encourage university students to pursue their business ideas and are open to students from all 58 universities within the Santander programme.

To mark the fifth anniversary of Santander Universities in the UK, Santander chief executive, Ana Botn, announced an additional 1.5m of funding to UK universities, taking its total investment to 7 million during 2012, as well as 100 new mobility grants of 2,500 available to UK students to study abroad.

She also extended the banks support for small businesses with the launch of a new programme to place graduates from the countrys top universities on internships with SMEs across the UK.

The programme to encourage entrepreneurialism amongst graduates is a collaboration between Santander and its university partners and aims to promote the benefits of working for a SME to third-year or recently graduated students, while providing smaller businesses with an injection of talent not always easy to obtain by companies with limited administration resources.

Santander will work with its partner universities to find students and companies who will benefit most from the scheme and will help with placement and administration, including project management, as well as part-funding a basic salary for the students.

Ana Botn said: Youth unemployment and particularly graduate unemployment is one of the most pressing issues for the UK economy. We hope our new programme offering 500 student internships to SMEs can help provide our talented graduate community with the opportunity to gain vital experience in the work place, whilst opening their eyes to the benefits of working for smaller companies.

SMEs have not typically attempted to compete with the graduate recruitment schemes of the big FTSE players and we hope that this initiative will give a wider range of companies the benefit of fresh, young talent.

While many business users may have a LinkedIn profile, they may overlook the other small business communication tools LinkedIn provides. For example, LinkedIn Groups are a simple way to create an online forum where customers, prospects and industry insiders can exchange ideas. Similar to an e-mail newsletter, the Group allows invited LinkedIn users to interact with one another and for a company to communicate key messages. With some simple work on the front-end to get the group moving, an entrepreneur can then take a back-seat to let the patients run the asylum – while still maintaining his or her position as the group leader.

A wiki (rhymes with tricky) is a website that allows users to edit the content that is posted on the page; the trick to wikis is ensuring the edits are accurate. Wikipedia, for example, is an editable online encyclopedia in which users can edit the content. The reason the information remains accurate is Wikipedia has designated individuals to monitor updates.

From a business perspective, a wiki is a great small business communication tool for companies with geographically distributed offices or teams. Users can post a document or other materials on an internal wiki and allow a group to review and edit the material in one place. Beyond the team collaboration, the wiki also helps with “version control,” a problem that occurs when some users do not have the most up-to-date version of a document. Microsoft’s SharePoint offers companies the ability to make internal wikis, as well as discussion boards.

Many people every year attempt to achieve success with an online business. They grab a domain name, throw a hastily made website online, and then become frustrated when they don’t achieve success quickly enough. They blame it on falling for a scam, or that online businesses don’t really work. When you are working for someone else it is easy to think of your workday falling into a certain set of work hours. Another important part of that mindset is to understand that in order to succeed you must be willing to put in the time and do whatever it takes to be successful. While it would be nice if the claims of earning a 6-figure income while working part-time were true, the reality is much different. It is possible to build a good income, and eventually reduce the number of hours that you work, most successful entrepreneurs put in some long hours when they are first getting their business up and running.

You should also be willing to spend time each and every day growing as an entrepreneur. This means going beyond merely learning the daily tasks you need to accomplish. Not all know that Wilson was a fighter pilot in World War II and received Purple heart, Air medal with 4 oak leaves and also the President Citation.

It all began with Wilson Harrell & Company started by Wilson himself after the war. The company distributed Kraft products to huge military PX market and in very less time the company sales reached $200 million. But Wilson had other ideas, he sold the distribution company. Then he bought Formula 409, a household cleaner product company for $30,000 and turned it around. He later sold the company for $7 million and bought 60 food brokerage companies whose total sale exceeded $500 million.

All in all, Wilson started over 100 companies and turned around a few. He was voted America’s no.1 columnist for the year 1995 and 1996 by the American society of Business for his monthly contribution to the Success Magazine. Wilson was also the past publisher of INC. magazine.

Along with being the Founder/Chairman of council of growing companies, nationwide organization, Wilson was also the leader and voice of entrepreneur’s movement in America. His book “For Entrepreneurs Only” was a bestseller and still one of the most admired in this genre.

In his book, he discussed the hunters and farmers of cave man age. He reasoned from science and a variety of studies that genes are passed down and often entrepreneurs are the children of entrepreneurs. At some point thousands of years ago, entrepreneurs were the hunters of our world while the farmers tend to be employees.

He enjoyed great success in life and died in 1997 at the age of 78 from lung cancer.
